Setting up for live sound evaluation (Unit 23)

This post gives a short evaluation on our group set up of the P.A & engineering for a live band.

Set up;

During the set up we found that getting all the equipment into the hall before beginning the set up helped us work efficiently. While making sure we had everything, we briefed ourselves & decided on the role of each person. (My role was miking on stage and connecting things to the multicore at the stage end). This made things run a lot faster as everyone knew there role. We found that when you get in your zone of work it can be easy to forget the simple things as one of our team forgot to connect the main outs of the mixer to the FOH speakers. Our main problem during the set up was faulty equipment like Jack leads with bent heads. Luckily we had spare jack leads. In a live situation if we didn't have spares we would of had to send a runner out to find a fix. We discover that the feedback destroyer wasn't working and we couldn't find a fix for this. If feedback had of been more of a problem for us we might of rung out the monitors manually using the graphic equalisers.

Soundcheck;

During the soundcheck it was brought to our attention that there was a mains hum in the mix, we identified that is was because the the effects units Power cables were tangled with the unbalanced jack cables carrying the the aux signals. As this was only noticeable when the FOH was turned up high and the band wasn't playing we over looked it. But detangling the cables would of dealt with this problem. During the sound check we lost all sound from the vocal mic, this was because the singer was moving around the stage a lot and the XLR had came loose from the mic. To fix this in future if we know the vocalist is high energy to tape around any cable connections that look weak.
